Plenary Keynote: Vintage Innovation

John Spencer

Hi, I’m John Spencer. I’m a former middle school teacher and current college professor on a quest to transform schools into bastions of creativity and wonder. I want to see teachers unleash the creative potential in all of their students so that kids can be makers, designers, artists, and engineers. I explore research, interview educators, deconstruct systems, and study real-world examples of design thinking in action. I share what I’m learning in books, blog posts, journal articles, free resources, animated videos, and podcasts.

Arts Education in Online Learning: Panel Discussion Series

View Info

Hide Info

There are a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to teaching the arts virtually. Even though the profession was thrust into the experience in 2020, very little guidance on virtual arts education has been developed before or since. Yet, the urgency to address virtual arts instruction is real. Thousands of SC families opted to remain in virtual education; as of September 2024 over 15,000 SC students were enrolled in a fully virtual school.

For some virtual students, arts education is a purchased, packaged asynchronous curriculum. For too many SC virtual students, access to arts education is not an option.

This multi-panel session will feature discussions among a variety of experts within the field of online learning and virtual arts instruction, followed by roundtable discussions.

ABC Institute’s mission is to strive to ensure SC students have access to arts-rich educational opportunities as a core component of curriculum. Therefore, we are conducting research on ways to serve both students and teachers in a fully virtual school environment. Join us for an afternoon of inquiry, discovery, and solutions-oriented discussions on opportunities for innovation in virtual arts education.

*This session will have a unique schedule.

1:15-1:55 Innovation for Access Panel

2:10-3:00 Breakout Roundtable Dialogue

Melissa Willis

H E Bonner Elementary

H.E. Bonner Elementary’s Partial-Magnet Program was established in 2018 to offer an innovative instructional program to Berkeley County families located in Moncks Corner in the northern area of our district. Our mission was, and continues to be, to include the arts as an essential component of the curriculum to optimize student achievement through a variety of learning experiences that facilitate the development of our students as lifelong learners and productive citizens. In addition to the core academic subjects, the HBE philosophy includes standards-based instruction in dance, theatre, music, visual art, and physical education. Students will have the opportunity to experience the arts through arts integration in their core subjects, exploratory classes, after school clubs, and other arts opportunities not typically found in a traditional elementary school. HBE is a considered a “partial-magnet” as we continue to have a traditional attendance zone like all other BCSD schools. Bonner Elementary is a Title 1 school with 74% pupils in poverty.
